Foreword

Dr. Madan Gulati

Ayurvedic Medical Sciences Doctor
Deputy Director, Department of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy and other traditional systems of medicine), Chandigarh, Ministry of Health, India

“Looking back at my more than thirty years of personal experience as a Vaidya (Vaidya – an Ayurvedic physician and practitioner; see the glossary in the appendix of the book — translator’s note) in the science of Ayurveda, I still find myself questioning how appropriate it is to call Ayurveda merely ‘India’s medical system’.”

“It is evident that it belongs to India, but is it only a ‘medical system’? Over the years, I have come to understand that calling Ayurveda just another ‘system of medicine’ is a rather narrow interpretation. As the very name ‘Ayurveda’ suggests, it is a complete body of knowledge about life in its wholeness. In my view, none of the modern health-oriented systems today reaches the depth of understanding of health that is reflected in the definition of the World Health Organization:

‘Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.’

Ayurveda not only promises such a state of health, italso  offers much more. It goes beyond this definition and provides a more comprehensive understanding of well-being, where, in addition to physical, social, and mental health, a person also attains spiritual well-being. A good student of Ayurveda is one who recognizes the limits of their ability to comprehend this great science and philosophy, which has evolved over millennia through the experiments and intellectual work of the Indian rishis (sages).”
